liminalscapes

the word liminal is defined as

(1) relating to a transitional or initial stage of a process or

(2) occupying a position at, or on both sides of, a boundary or threshold

inspired by surrealism and other types of visceral art, this project deals with the idea of being “in between.” the word “liminal” means to be situated at a boundary or threshold, and “-scape” denotes a type of scene. liminalscapes examines this in-between space, both occupied and unoccupied, as well as experiments with color throughout the process. i try to convey the idea of boundaries and thresholds through places such as doorways, windows, stairways, etc., as well as having figures inhabit these in between realms. i experience dissociation very regularly in my life, and through this project i am trying to express and share that experience. the uncertainty and strangeness of life is something we are all forced to confront. i try to exaggerate those experiences visually through this process. i feel that we also live in very strange times with this pandemic, the world itself feels a little in between right now, almost stuck, and i feel that this has influenced my work as I channel these emotions into my photos despite my limited shooting capabilities due to this pandemic.
